Music Psychotherapist
Alexandra Gibson
Sussex-based HCPC registered music therapist working with individuals and in group settings

About
My approach
I am an HCPC-registered Music Therapist with a rich musical background as a first-study singer at the Royal College of Music and an extensive professional career in performing and vocal coaching. I have over 30 years of experience teaching singing to adults, children and young people, and now bring this rich experience together into my psychodynamic Music Therapy practice.
As a psychodynamically trained music therapist, I have worked alongside individuals and groups across a wide range of settings, including work with non-verbal children ( and with additional complex needs) neurodivergent young people, adults with acquired brain injury and acute mental health conditions.
I am approachable, motivated and reflective, with a passion for advocating for others whose voices need to be heard, as well as widening access to music therapy across clinical, educational, and community settings. I bring energy, curiosity, and a genuine belief in the power of 'therapeutic musical connection and safety' to every aspect of my work.
I have a trauma informed and strength based approach and I work alongside children/young people and adults. I offer 1:1 and group sessions to support those who are struggling with social, emotional, behavioural and mental health challenges, whether a neurodivergent and/or mental health diagnosis has been made or not. I work alongside people with learning disabilities, students with EHCPs requiring therapeutic support and have a strength based approach towards all people with SEND, ADHD, and ASD.
"Music Therapy is an established psychological clinical intervention, delivered by HCPC registered music therapists to help people whose lives have been affected by injury, illness or disability through supporting their psychological, emotional, cognitive, physical, communicative and social needs." (BAMT, 2026)
Understanding
What IS music therapy?
Music therapy is a trauma-informed intervention which builds safety, trust, collaboration and empowerment. It encourages bottom-up processing by its sensory and creative approach and activates all the areas of the brain by connecting emotions, thoughts and feelings.
Because this creative intervention happens within shared music and sound, this takes away any pressure for the need to find words. There is also no ‘musical skill’ required to attend music therapy sessions.
If you or someone you care for is in need of therapeutic support and looking to find this in an inclusive and non judgmental environment where shared music, sound and safety is the vessel for change, then please contact me to arrange an assessment and I will get back to you ASAP.
“Music can reach where words cannot — offering a safe, shared space for expression and connection.”
